## Section 2: The Semantic Foundation

This document specifies the design and governance of the **ontology**, the conceptual blueprint for the Financial Digital Twin's knowledge graph.

### Ontology Architecture

An **ontology** is a formal, explicit specification of a shared conceptualization. In the context of the Financial Digital Twin, it provides a definitive, machine-readable vocabulary for all data, defining concepts, properties, and the relationships between them. This shared vocabulary is essential to resolve ambiguity across the dozens of disparate data sources that feed the platform, ensuring that data is integrated in a consistent and meaningful way.

The ontology serves as the semantic backbone of the system, enabling the shift from simple data correlation to deep, multi-hop **relationship analysis**.

### Industry Standards: Adopting FIBO

To ensure conceptual soundness and accelerate development, this platform **mandates the adoption and formal extension of the Financial Industry Business Ontology (FIBO)**.

FIBO is an open-source, industry-led initiative to define financial concepts, instruments, and relationships using semantic web standards. The strategic advantages of adopting FIBO are significant:

* **Accelerated Development:** It provides thousands of pre-defined, peer-reviewed concepts, saving years of effort that would be required to model the financial domain from scratch.
* **Semantic Interoperability:** It provides a common language for data, enabling seamless integration with other FIBO-compliant systems and external data sources.
* **Conceptual Soundness:** The model has been vetted by subject matter experts across the financial industry, ensuring it is robust, logical, and reflects real-world financial complexities.

### Governance and Best Practices

The enterprise ontology is a living asset that will evolve. A formal governance process is established to manage extensions to the core FIBO standard.

* **Proprietary Namespace:** All internal extensions to FIBO **must** be defined in a proprietary namespace (e.g., `https://example.com/ontology/fdt/`). The core FIBO ontology will be imported using `owl:imports`, ensuring a clean separation between the standard and our custom extensions. This prevents conflicts during FIBO version upgrades.
* **Semantic Versioning (SEMVER):** The proprietary ontology will adhere to **Semantic Versioning (MAJOR.MINOR.PATCH)**.
    * **MAJOR** version changes indicate an incompatible API change.
    * **MINOR** version changes add functionality in a backward-compatible manner.
    * **PATCH** version changes are for backward-compatible bug fixes.
* **Deprecation Policy:** Concepts, properties, or relationships that are superseded **must not** be deleted. Instead, they will be marked with `owl:deprecated true`. This ensures that downstream applications relying on older versions of the ontology do not break.
* **Proof-of-Concept Validation:** Before a proposed change to the ontology is ratified, it must be validated with a proof-of-concept. This involves loading sample data and executing representative queries to ensure the model behaves as expected and meets business needs.

### Practical Schema Mapping

The following table provides a practical mapping from the core concepts of the lending domain to their corresponding high-level classes and properties in FIBO. This is not an exhaustive list but serves as the foundational layer of the model.

| **Core Concept** | **FIBO Class (Label)** | **Key FIBO Properties** |
